Applying for Social Security Disability Benefits Online

If you have access to the internet, a convenient and secure way to apply for your benefits is to use the SSA’s official online portal.

You can apply for Social Security disability benefits here.

Aside from offering an online application, the SSA website offers many tools and options to allow you to:

  •       Review your application and manage current benefits.
  •       Apply for disability, retirement, Medicare, or appeal a decision.
  •       Manage your personal information.
  •       Set up or change direct deposit for benefits.
  •       Print proof of your benefits, or your 1099 form.
  •       Find help and answers on a variety of topics.

You can also contact an SSA representative via telephone toll-free at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 8:00 am – 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

A Warning about Social Security Fraud

With an increase in non-in-person applications and appeals due to COVID-19, the SSA warns of a risk of potential Social Security fraud.

To avoid fraud, consider the following actions:

  •       Don’t expect the SSA to call randomly without an appointment.
  •       Don’t trust caller ID just because it says it’s the SSA.
  •       Don’t give out personal information to an unexpected caller.
  •       Don’t apply for benefits on unofficial websites (use the SSA or other .gov website only).
  •       Don’t panic. If you think you’ve received a fraudulent call, you can always hang up and call the SSA directly to discuss it with them.

Scheduling a Phone Interview with the Macon Social Security Office

While the Macon office is currently closed, you can schedule a phone interview with them at your earliest convenience. If the office reopens at a later date and you need to schedule an appointment, call ahead. Walk-in appointments can yield lengthy wait times.

You can schedule an interview at: 1-888-759-3917 or TTY: 1-478-476-9342.

You can also call in order to confirm a telephone hearing, request a postponement to wait for an in-person or video hearing, update your records to ensure we have the appropriate telephone number and address, and hear the status for your pending hearing.

To prepare for your interview, you may need to gather some personal documents to proceed with your case.

These documents include:

  • Birth certificate or other proof of birth
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status if you were not born in the United States
  • U.S. military discharge paper(s) if you had military service before 1968
  • W-2 forms(s) and/or self-employment tax returns for last year
  • More details about your illnesses, injuries or conditions, and your work history
  • Medical evidence already in your possession. This includes medical records, doctors' reports, and recent test results
  • Award letters, pay stubs, settlement agreements or other proof of any temporary or permanent workers' compensation-type benefits you received

The SSA will ask for more information as your case moves forward including your name, date of birth, social security number, citizenship status, past benefits, information about your spouse and children, and information about your employment and income.

They may ask you to fax or e-fax some necessary documents. This will be explained as you discuss your case.

Even if you’ve already applied for benefits, you can still call your local Social Security office in Macon or the SSA to ask questions and determine the next steps of your case.

When to Call a Social Security Attorney

Although the SSA and your local Social Security office are there to help, there are many times that consulting an attorney can maximize your chance of a favorable outcome in your case.

The right attorney will have an expert knowledge and intuition about navigating the SSA’s expectations and the criteria they use to evaluate your eligibility for benefits. They can advocate on your behalf with the SSA, ensure you have all the necessary medical evidence, and prepare you for next steps.

The process can be lengthy, and can involve multiple denials and levels of appeal. An attorney can guide you through the appeals process and represent you during any hearings you might have, including making arguments and presenting evidence on your behalf.

Typically, you don’t pay an attorney’s fee up front for Social Security cases. Instead, your attorney will collect a percentage of your initial backpay if you win your case. This amount is federally restricted to ensure you have access to the legal representation you deserve.
